Intézményünk 2016. július 1-én vált ki a Szent István Egyetemből, így visszanyerte 2000 előtti függetlenségét. Fenntartónk 2016 és 2020 között az Emberi Erőforrások Minisztériuma volt, gazdálkodásunkat kancellár felügyelte. 2020. augusztus 1-től a Marek József Alapítvány biztosítja működésünket, a kancellári rendszer pedig megszűnt.
A fondra jelenleg a köziratokról, a közlevéltárakról és a magánlevéltári anyag védelméről szóló 1995. évi LXVI. törvényben megfogalmazott védelmi idő szabályai vonatkoznak, így az csak k kutatható.
