Budapesti Tudományegyetem Bölcsészettudományi Kar magyar-latin-görög szak 1896-1901, alapvizsga 1898.03.16., szakvizsga: 1900.04.26., tanári vizsga: 1901.04.23. (Párhuzamosan az Eötvös Collegium hallgatója volt 1896-tól, 1901-ig szeniorként élt ott.) Szilágyi Sándor tudományos munkát a doktori disszertáció megírása után alig végzett (egyetlen megjelent fordítása Priszkosz rhétor töredékei), budapesti gimnáziumokban tanított, a Károlyi-kormány és a Tanácsköztársaság alatt vállalt közéleti feladatai miatt később nem taníthatott. Ady, Horváth János, Kodály és Molnár Antal barátságáról maradtak fenn levelek, visszaemlékezések. Emlékezést írt róla Benedek Marcell, Szathmáry Lajos és Galamb Sándor.
