Az ELTE az alapítása óta eltelt évszázadokban több néven működött: 1635-1769 Nagyszombati Jezsuita Egyetem, 1769-1784 Királyi Magyar Tudományegyetem, 1784-1873 Pesti Királyi Tudományegyetem, 1873-1921 Budapesti Tudományegyetem, 1921-1950 Magyar Királyi Pázmány Péter Tudományegyetem, 1950-től Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem. A második világháború után az egyetemről leválasztották az orvosi kart és a hittudományi kárt, így három karral, a bölcsésztudományi, a természettudományi és a jogi karral működött tovább.
